With perhaps an eye on the presidential elections in December, Mengão President Márcio Braga has announced his dream signings for his club's 2007 Libertadores Cup campaign. As well as the perpetually-linked Ronaldo, Braga wants to bring Bayer Leverkusen's Juan and Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme to Gavéa for next season.

In an interview with Rádio Manchete, Braga also passed his comments on the present squad: "The group is not bad, but we need reinforcements, a player for each position. I repeat that the three (Ronaldo, Juan and Riquelme) would be excellent signings.

" Brazil's biggest club have been struggling at the wrong end of the Brasileiro table in recent years, having not won the title since 1992. With allegations of mismanagement constantly surrounding the Rio giants as well, it remains to be seen whether they could ever find the finances necessary to complete such deals.

BLATTER: BRAZIL'S STADIUMS NOT UP TO SCRATCH

FIFA President Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter has warned Brazil that they have plenty of work to do if they want to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Speaking after a meeting with Brazil's President Lula in Brasília, Blatter explained that a prospective host nation must be able to provide stadiums that adhere to various requirements, including safety.

"It will be necessary to build at least 10 stadia in eight to 10 different cities all around the country, and this is a matter Brazil will have to solve," said Blatter. He went on to warn the five-times champions that although they are the only candidate so far, that does not mean they are guaranteed to host the 2014 event. "The ball is in Brazil's court," he went on. "The Committee of the FIFA will adopt the same criteria they demanded for the organization of the World Cup in Germany."

Brazil's 22-player selection for their October 07 friendly against Kuwait has been confirmed, with head coach Dunga electing to make four changes from the squad that competed against Argentina and Wales earlier this month. FC Porto goalkeeper Helton, Grêmio's teenage midfield gem Lucas and Sevilla wingbacks Daniel Alves and Adriano all earned call-ups, but there was no room in the party for Helton's club-mate Anderson, 18, who has been in sensational form this season, or strikers Ricardo Oliveira and Adriano of A.C Milan and Internazionale, respectively.

Perhaps the most intriguing change was Daniel Alves' inclusion at the expense of Cicinho. The 23-year-old, who turned down a proposal to represent Spain at Germany 2006 in order to pursue an international future with the Seleção, had been tipped to oust Maicon - and not the Real Madrid flyer - from the squad. Left-wingback Adriano won the battle to step in for the injured Gilberto, leaving Jorge Wagner (Real Betis), Fábio Aurelio (Liverpool) and Michel Bastos (Lille) disappointed, while Lucas' invite came at a cost to Júlio Baptista, who was demoted from the pack. The agile Helton, 28, got the nod ahead of his former Vasco team-mate Fábio, whose displays for Cruzeiro have come under fire in recent weeks.

DUNGA TO COACH OLYMPIC BID

Already showing a different approach to national team management than his predecessor Carlos Alberto Parreira, Dunga has further distanced himself from the previous regime by announcing his intention to coach Brazil's under-23 squad in their bid to qualify for the 2008 Olympic games.

In 2003, Brazil's previous Olympic challenge foundered under the tutelage of Ricardo Gomes at the qualifying stage, with Parreira taking no part. Despite possessing players of the caliber of Robinho and Diego, the Canarinha failed to even qualify for the 2004 Athens event, and so the Olympic gold medal remains the only major football prize they have never won.

Having selected several players expected to feature in the 2008 version, including Rafael Sóbis, Marcelo and now Lucas, Dunga wants to use the challenge to gain coaching experience: "Nothing is decided yet, but this an unconquered title for Brazil and I would like to participate," said the 43-year-old. "The more players of that age we see, the better, as much for the team as the players themselves, who will already have experience of the main team," he added.

COSTA TO MISS MENGÃO MATCH

Santos keeper Fábio Costa is set to miss this weekend's Brasileiro fixture at the Vila Belmiro against Flamengo after suffering minor injuries in a scuffle with fans after Peixe's match against Fluminense last night. The custodian hurt his right index finger and suffered bruising to his face.

The injuries are expected to take around a week to heal. Club doctor Carlos Braga told Radio Bandeirantes that he feared at first the keeper would be out for longer as he is also experiencing problems with a tendon: "Fábio also felt his leg again after the misunderstanding with the supporters. We will start treatment next week to see if he recuperates within a week," said Braga.

Marcelo Mattos is set to become the first MSI era signing to represent Corinthians in one hundred matches. The tough-tackling midfielder, 22, will reach the milestone if, as expected, he steps out in the white shirt against Internacional tomorrow.

The former FC Tokyo player was one of the early products of the partnership between the Paulista power and MSI, a shadowy London-based company who attempted to bankroll the club to Brasileiro, Copa Libertadores and FIFA Club World Championship successes. Although the Timão have only managed to tick box one of three, Marcelo Mattos has performed consistently at the heart of their midfield and earned inclusion into both Placar magazine's and the CBF's Brasileiro team of the season for 2005.

ROMÁRIO COMMENTS ON RIO CLUBS' INTEREST

Upon touching down in Rio de Janeiro, one of the city's favourite sons - the ageless goal-getter Romário - was quickly inundated with one hundred and one questions. Among the subjects the 40-year-old had time to comment on was alleged interest in him from two of the metropolis' clubs - Vasco and América.

With regard to the four-time Brasileiro kings' desire to return him to the São Januário, Romário revealed; "I'm pleased to know that the president of Vasco (Eurico Miranda) has continued saying that the doors of the club are always open to me. But I really can't say what will happen." Switching his attention to their Carioca rivals, the 1994 FIFA World Player of the Year added; "To play for América was a dream of my father's and of mine me too. But I have already represented the team in some friendlies. I still don't know what I'll do this year nor in 2007."

The reverberation of regret must still haunt Flamengo. Ronaldo was barely out of his preteens when he attended a trial at the club. Blessed with top-notch finishing and the ability to dribble whilst in fifth gear, he easily impressed and was consequently invited back to audition the following day. It was not something that Ronaldo had not accounted for, and unable to stump up enough centavos to pay for his return bus fare, he hoped that Flamengo would cover the cost. They didn't, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Just a few years later, the Rio de Janeiro giants looked on in awe as the kid that could have been their own property made headline after headline in the blue of Cruzeiro. In total, he was on target 58 times in 60 matches for the Raposa, who subsequently pocketed a small fortune by selling him to PSV Eindhoven. How Flamengo must rue their failure to part with the small change it would have taken to ensure the prodigy's return.

Had it been another club, their chances of ever contracting "The Phenomenon" may have been extinguished. Not Flamengo. The Mengão have always remained the team of Ronaldo's heart, and he was frequently spoken of his desire to don the unmistakable red and black hoops before hanging up his boots. "It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play for Flamengo," he recently enthused. "It would be a great honour."

With his relationship with Real Madrid in deterioration earlier this year, Ronaldo even suggested that he could join Flamengo following Germany 2006, with sports giant Nike reportedly prepared to finance the deal. The prospective transfer animated one man - his father, Nélio; "If he returns to Brazil, he has to play for Flamengo. It is a dream of mine to see him playing for Flamengo. He always says that he wants to play for the Mengão, that it is the club who he supports. He is a professional and he has a contract with Real until 2008, but I am sure that he will play for Flamengo someday.

CORINTHIANS EYE UP SÃO PAULO TRIO

Emerson Leão is hellbent on achieving success at Corinthians. And after proclaiming that he is "99.9% certain" that Nilmar, linked with a move away from the club, will remain at the Parque São Jorge, the ex-Seleção governor has set his sights on snaring a trio of players from Paulista foes São Paulo. Defensive stalwart Fabão, midfield anchorman Mineiro and attacking midfielder Danilo are all out of contract at the end of the year, and the growing uncertainty regarding their futures has alerted Leão, who is keen to bolster the Timão squad with experienced, home-based competitors.

Mineiro, 31, has been one of Brasileiro's most consistent - and outstanding - performers in recent seasons, and following Edmílson's injury, he was promoted into Brazil's 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. The ex-São Caetano ball-winner is a huge favourite among the Tricolor Paulista fans, who would be strongly opposed to him joining their cross-state rivals. In contrast, Corinthians would face less resistance in trying to land Danilo. Despite a rich goals return, the 27-year-old's popularity has seesawed since a 2005 switch from Goiás, and his departure would facilitate São Paulo adding fresh blood to the offensive ranks.

NILMAR HEADING FOR TIMÃO EXIT?

The future of Corinthians striker Nilmar, thought to have been settled after the club agreed a deal with his previous club Lyon, is now in doubt after it has been revealed that the 2005 Brasileiro winners have not paid for him. Lyon have complained to FIFA that there is still €8 million outstanding from his transfer fee, agreed at the start of the season.

The 22-year-old, winner of the 2003 World Youth Cup, is currently recovering from knee surgery after a serious knee injury suffered earlier this year. One club who may pick up the pieces could be Corinthians' city rivals São Paulo. The league leaders have denied their interest however, and the future remains unclear for the former Internacional forward.

Before his injury, Nilmar had been one of the shining lights of Corinthians' season, topping the goalscoring charts in the Campeonato Paulista and generally outshining his (now former) colleague Carlos Tevez. Corinthians' number nine, a native of the state of Paraná has so far scored 31 goals in his 55 Timão appearances to date.

FELIPÃO TO TAKE OVER HAMMERS?

Life is getting hectic for followers of West Ham United. In recent weeks the club has signed Argentine FIFA World Cup stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, and is now being linked with a takeover by MSI, the investment group who have been backing Corinthians. Apparently if MSI complete their purchase of the London club, Luiz Felipe Scolari will take over as the team's new manager.

English tabloid paper The People claims that MSI, led by entrepreneur Kia Joorabchian, are close to sealing their deal with The Hammers' current board. The price quoted is somewhere between £80 and £100 million. Upon completion of the deal, manager Alan Pardew would be replaced with Brazil's 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning coach.

Before this summer's tournament, 57-year-old Scolari came close to taking over the English national team, before backing off after severe press intrusion into his life. The gruff Gaúcho is currently in charge of Portugal, who he has taken to the Euro 2004 final and 2006 FIFA World Cup semi-finals since taking over in 2003.

FAB GETS THE NOD TO PARTNER OBINA

Without the suspended Luizão for Sunday's trip to Fortaleza, Flamengo selector Ney Franco has opted against deploying a lone striker. Instead, the former Ipatinga boss has confirmed the presence of teenage promise Fabiano Oliveira in the Rubro-Negro starting eleven. The 19-year-old, whose performances to date for the Rio outfit have yo-yoed from the favourable to the forgettable, will partner ex-Vitória and Al-Ittihad campaigner Obina in attack.

Fortaleza currently sit perilously in the bottom-four, four points short of safety. Meanwhile, only a superior goal difference to Ponte Preta keeps Flamengo out of the relegation zone. A source of great concern to Ney Franco will be the fact that his troops have managed just 21 goals in 23 outings this campaign, although their Round 24 opponents have not done much better - the Lions have only found the net 24 times in 23 matches. Unsurprisingly, the two sides' previous meeting in the 2006 Brasileiro ended goalless.

BRAZIL REMAIN TOP OF FIFA RANKINGS

FIFA have published the Coca-Cola World Rankings for September 2006, and Brazil have remained in the number one spot, just ahead of FIFA World Cup runners-up France. The scoring system, which produces a league table-style snapshot of the global game, has been in existence since 1993.

FIFA World Cup winners Italy are only in fifth, surprisingly below England in fourth and Argentina in third. Other unexpected placings include Cameroon in twelfth and Uruguay in fourteenth, despite neither nation having reached this summer's tournament. American Samoa remain rooted to the bottom, equal 198th. The Seleção's next opponents Kuwait are 71st, joint with North Americans Canada.

This year sees a slight change in the way the rankings are calculated. From July on, only results over the last four years will be used, a decrease on the previous of eight. Several factors have been totally revised, while number of goals scored and home advantage will no longer have any effect on the ranking.

FLAMENGO TRIUMPH IN RIO CLÁSSICO

Flamengo finally produced a decent performance to triumph over eternal rivals Botafogo in the Maracan&aatilde; last night. First half goals from Renato Silva and an own goal by Fogo's Rafael Marques sealed a vital win for the rubro-negro, who moved up to 16th place in their latest struggle against relegation. Defeated Botafogo are still twelfth, four points above Mengão.

Ney Franco's 'visiting' side started the brighter, but were unable to create many clear-cut goalscoring opportunities. However it was the Alvinegro hosts who had the first chance. Reinaldo's stab at goal from a five-minute corner was well tipped over by Bruno in the Fla goal. On fourteen, Fla's Renato drilled in a 30-yard free-kick, well saved by Lopes in the Botafogo goal. The visitors then opened the scoring on 21 minutes after a quick counter-attack. Renato Augusto charged down the right, and his ball in was swept home either by Luizão or Fogão defender Rafael Marques, depending on your opinion.

Five minutes later, Júnior César, free on the left, fired the ball across the six-yard box, but Lima couldn't reach it as Botafogo hit back. Flamengo began to get the upper hand and soon scored again. Defender Fernando hooked a corner back into the danger area and Renato Silva prodded the ball home. With a two goal lead, the Flamenguistas watching from the stands saw their team relax and pass the ball nicely.

Although Botafogo brought on forward Wando for Rafael Marques, Flamengo continued to carve out opportunities. On 53, Renato combined well with Juan and the former tested Lopes with a low drive. Fogo's best chance came on the hour, as Reinaldo shot just past Bruno's right post from 20 yards. Late on Obina wasted the two chances to further extend the lead, but Fla were happy with their performance overall. They face Fortaleza at that side's Castelão ground next Sunday while Botafogo host Grêmio the same day.

DUDU ON TARGET IN MOSCOW DERBY

A rare header from Dudu Cearense thrust CSKA into a Moscow derby lead, but Spartak twice rallied from behind to claim a share of the points. The former Vitória maestro, 23, rose highest to meet a Daniel Carvalho cross on 27 minutes and give the 2005 UEFA Cup winners an advantage. Following Iranek's equalizer, CSKA again edged in front courtesy of an Olic effort, only for Pavlyuchenko to make it 2-2 eight minutes from time.

ATHIRSON WELCOMES FLAMENGO RETURN

Former Mengão star Athirson has expressed his pleasure at rumours linking him with a return to his former club Flamengo for next year's Libertadores. The 29-year-old wingback, currently at German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, but has only sporadically appeared for the 2002 UEFA Champions League runners-up. However, the player himself has distanced himself somewhat from the move, sighting the club's own unwillingness to approach him as unappealing.

Although Athirson has also turned out for Cruzeiro and Santos in his homeland, it is playing for Flamengo that he is best remembered for. With the Gavéa side he won Carioca titles in 1999 and 2000 and the now-defunct Copa Mercosul also in 1999. He played 252 games and scored 37 goals in the scarlet and black shirt, and commented on the possibility of a return: "To take part in the Libertadores would be great on a professional level. If the club came after me, it would mean a lot to me as I started my career there.""

The problem is they haven't shown any interest." The flamboyant Rio-born defender also appeared 17 times for the Seleção, scoring two goals. In a previous spell in Europe, Athirson was briefly at Italian giants Juvents, but made little impression there.

FLAMENGO PLAN ON RETURNING FELIPE TO THE GÁVEA

Flamengo's plans for an assault on the 2007 Copa Libertadores are already underway. According to reports, the club have placed their former number 10, midfield sorcerer Felipe, at the top of their end-of-season wish list. The one-time Vasco prodigy quit Flamengo for cross-city rivals Fluminense in a controversial move between the 2004 and 2005 campaigns, and although the two parties exchanged ill-disposed remarks back then, it would not dissuade the Mengão from re-contracting the player.

Felipe, recently turned 29, is presently on the books at Al-Saad, whom he propelled to the Qatari Championship title earlier this year. His existing deal in the Middle East will expire in December, which will free him to join Flamengo ahead of the 2007 season. However, the Rio force could face competition for his signature from Minas Gerais counterparts Cruzeiro, who have been repeatedly linked with a move for the ex-Galatasaray flop.

KAKÁ: BORN TO PLAY FOR REAL

President of Real Madrid, Ramón Calderón has reiterated his desire one day to capture the signature of Milan star Kaká. The new chief at the Bernabeu pledged to bring in the 24-year-old as part of his presidential election manifesto. Although the deal didn't work out, largely due to Milan's reluctance to let go of their prize asset, Calderón reaffirmed his desire to bring the Seleção hero to the Spanish capital.

"My claim about him can still be fulfilled," said Calderón. "I said that he would come here during my time as President, and there are still four more years to ensure that happens". Real are arguably in need of a new playmaker after the summer retirement of Zinedine Zidane. Although they have strengthened in key areas such as central defence and in the midfield engine room, Fabio Capello's side are still lacking creativity in the final third.

Some people see Robinho as the man to fill the Zidane void, although the 22-year-old has only rarely played that deep in midfield and may not be the short-term solution for a club like Real Madrid. "Kaká was born to play from Real Madrid," continued Calderón. "I am convinced of this and sooner or later he will come here."

CAFU WANTS FINAL SELEÇÃO MATCH

The 140-game plus international career of a Brazilian legend may not yet be over. 36-year-old Cafu, a veteran of nearly ten years in Italy's Serie A, refused to rule out a return to his nation's colours again before the end of his career. The right-wingback broke the Brazilian record for FIFA World Cup Finals appearances this summer with his twentieth match, beating the jointly-held previous record of 18 games played by Taffarel and current national team boss Dunga.

Cafu said that he has not made his farewell appearance and is still waiting to have one: "First I am thinking about Milan and the start of the Italian season," he commented. "I will think about returning to national team duty or not later on." According to most statisticians, the former São Paulo and Roma man needs just two games for Brazil to reach the magical total of 150 games and most players would surely love to have the chance to achieve that milestone.

He has also pronounced himself pleased with the start Brazil have made under his friend Dunga. After the opening draw with Norway, comfortable victories over Argentina and Wales have shown the new-look Brazil to be a force to be reckoned with.

CARLOS ALBERTO SLAMS DEPARTED DUO

The sudden transfer of Corinthians' Argentine idols Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano has left something of a bad taste in the mouths of many at the Parque S˜o Jorge. One of those with the most acrimonious feelings about the situation is Timão's 21-year-old schemer Carlos Alberto, who was vented his feelings to Globo.

"The way they left smacked of ungratefulness. The two of them had always been treated well here - the important thing now is to concentrate on those who are still here," said Carlos Alberto, who is no stranger to controversy himself when the Argentine 'Hermanos' are concerned. Soon after Tevez signed for Corinthians in 2005, he was involved in a training ground altercation with the new man which ended in a fight. This season he and Mascherano quarrelled after a heavy challenge in a training session.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding their departure to West Ham, the duo left an indelible mark on Brazil and their club. Tevez scored 42 goals in 72 games for the 2005 champions, while Mascherano's cool defensive shielding and distribution were a key part of the team's success. Carlos Alberto and his fellow team-mates have a struggle on their hands if they are to finish respectably this season, as Corinthians currently lie fifteenth with only 26 points.

YOUNGSTERS EARN BRAZIL WIN OVER VALIANT WALES

Almost half a century ago, Brazil required a memorable second-half goal from an unrenowned teenager to advance past the unfancied Welsh and into the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup. And although the occasion was of far less significance when the teams met for a second time today, it took another eye-catching effort from the boot of a teenager to set the Seleç&atild;o on the road to a defeat of the brave Dragons.

Marcelo, at just 18 the youngster member of Dunga's squad, made himself a hero on his international bow with a fabulous left-foot drive on 59 minutes. Collecting the ball 30 yards from goal, the Fluminense product took a stride forward before unleashing a shot that had power and accuracy in equal measure. It gave Wales goalkeeper Paul Jones no chance, nestling in the bottom-left of his net and assuring the Brazilian fans that there's more than one left-wingback capable of scoring spectacular goals.

With the five-time world champions in the ascendancy, emerging talent Vágner Love made sure of the victory. Exhibiting his trademark step-overs, Robinho drew three opponents towards him before squaring the ball to Cicinho. The dashing right-flanker delivered a sumptuous cross, and with a casual flick of the head, Vágner Love glanced the ball past Jones to make it 2-0.

Overall, the Brazilian performance did not reach the heights that it did against Argentina. Nonetheless, Dunga's side recovered from a lacklustre first period showing to score twice - without response - and complete a thoroughly rewarding stay in London.

Recovered from a knock that had threatened his participation against Wales, right-wingback Maicon has been added to the Brazil side that will take to the pitch at White Hart Lane. His inclusion, which will see expected starter Cicinho take his seat on the bench, means that the Seleção could field an entirely different starting lineup from the one that confronted Argentina on Sunday.

Internazionale's Maicon, ex-Cruzeiro and Monaco, possesses contrasting attributes to Cicinho. Powerful and good in the tackle, the 25-year-old is also capable of charging forward at speed, as evidenced by his 2004 Olympic qualifying wonder goal against Paraguay.

VÁGNER LOVE: "THIS IS MY BIG CHANCE"

Hearing his name on Brazil's starting list is something Vágner Love has long been pining for. Yesterday, when Dunga read out his eleven for the Seleção's match against Wales, the CSKA Moscow headliner's prayers were answered. The highly-touted 22-year-old was named alongside fellow up-and-comer, Rafael Sobis, in an attack that - although untried - evoked genuine hope among the Brazilian supporters still nonplussed by their FIFA World Cup failings.

Vágner Love is fully aware that, given the intense competition for striking places in the team, chances don't grow on trees. It's a circumstance that has left him eager to impress; "For me, this game is not a friendly. It could be for others, but not for me. Regardless of his denials on the subject, it was widely assumed that the subject of Dunga's presence was Cruzeiro boy wonder, Wagner. Unfortunately for the 21-year-old, the Raposa were reduced to 10 men as early as the sixteenth minute, relegating him to a less adventurous midfield role. It did not prevent him from going close to scoring, however, though following a typically-incisive break from deep - and subsequent dribble around Fogão keeper Lopes - he registered a 'miss of the season' contender.

Corinthians' two most profilic training ground sparrers renewed their rivalry today. Big money signings Carlos Alberto and Carlos Tevez become embroiled in an argument on the practise pitch; one which threatened to degenerate into fist-fight before they were separated by not-so-surprsied team-mates.

It's not the first time the pair have confronted one another in an aggressive manner. In March of last year, they squared off during a training session. Tevez, 22, also traded punches with Marquinhos in 2005, and had a bust-up with Carlão earlier this year.

Carlos Alberto, a 2004 UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto, is another who is hardly alien to altercations with his Timão colleagues. Interestingly, the skilfull playmaker's most publicised spat was with another Argentinean - midfield holder Javier Mascherano.

Internacional of Porto Alegre were tonight crowned the 2006 Copa Libertadores champions. In a second successive all-Brazilian Final, Inter survived a late onslaught to hold São Paulo to a 2-2 draw on the night, clinching them a 4-3 aggregate win over the 2005 kings of South America.

Inside their own Beira-Rio stadium, captain Fernandã fired Internacional into a first-half lead, only for São Paulo's Fabão to net a 51st-minute equalizer. Tinga restored the Colorado's advantage on 65 minutes, but was red-carded for his celebrations.

At a numerical disadvantage, Inter coach Abel Braga urged his troops to retreat, leaving Rafael Sobis to forage alone in attack. Inevitably, they were blitzed by a Paulista storm, and only a combination of some expert goalkeeping from veteran Clemer - and their right-hand upright - preserved their lead until as late as the 84th-minute, when Lenilson bundled home São Paulo's second.

Needing another goal to take the contest to a penalty shootout, the Tricolor Paulista continued to bombard their now-exhausted opponents. However, Clemer - who was culpable for Lenilson's goal - produced three invaluable saves to redeem himself.

The final whistle sparked delirium on the terraces, a sea of red rejoicing their first ever continental title. Internacional had finally avenged their 1980 loss to Nacional and claimed the Copa Libertadores title.

DUNGA DEBUTS WITH DRAW IN OSLO

Dunga failed to get off to a winning start at the Brazil controls tonight, though a fine effort from Daniel Carvalho did grab the Seleção a 1-1 draw against Norway in Oslo. The CKSA Moscow ace's strike, just after the hour mark, cancelled out Morten Gamst Pedersen's opener for the hosts; a goal for which goalie Gomes and defender Lúcio were accountable.

On the whole, the Brazilian magic that had been dormant during the 2006 FIFA World Cup appeared in fits and starts, but it was insufficient to keep Dunga in silence, the former midfield enforcer roaring instructions to his players more and more as the contest progressed. The South Americans did have the better of the exchanges, though, and the fact that the man-of-the-match gong went to Norwegian keeper Thomas Myhre spoke volumes.

Daniel Carvalho and Robinho were the visitors' most illuminative figures, while pass-master Elano and Fred, whose finishing prowess kept Myhre on his toes, both enjoyed their moments.

Unfavourably, however, Brazil's perennial defensive deficiencies were all too apparent, and it's a shortcoming that Dunga must find a cure for if he is to re-establish the five-time world champions' as all-conquerors. Indeed, the Vikings' goal should have been prevented - by not one, but a few competitors in canary-yellow jerseys (as well as green-shirted Gomes).

Brazil vs Croatia

Brazil kick off the defence of their World Cup title against a strong Croatian side in Berlin on Tuesday. Brazilian preparations have of course been meticulous though not without controversy. First came the criticisms levelled at the Seleção for only playing one warm up game against sub standard opposition (although impressive, their 4-0 thrashing of New Zealand told us very little about the current form of the team), then there were concerns over Ronaldo who has trained sporadically due to blisters on his feet and a fever. Most recently there was a much publicised dispute between Ronaldo and Brazilian President Lula over the striker's expanding waistline, and the fact the Brazilian first team lost 3-0 to the second team in a practice match last week. However, Carlos Alberto Parreira has been in this situation before when he masterminded his country to World Cup victory in 1994. Back then the pressure was arguably even greater as the Seleção had not won in 24 years. This time around though, it is the tag of favourites that is weighing uncomfortably around Brazilian necks and could prove to be their undoing. The world is expecting a show that Brazil may not yet be ready to give. But Parreira will not be concerned. His pragmatic approach to the game will mean the only priority against Croatia will be to take all three points. And there are a lot of positive factors to have arisen over the past few weeks. Kaká has been in inspirational form, the spirit in the camp is high, Adriano appears to be putting his troubles at Inter behind him, and substitutes Juninho and Robinho have suggested they could have a major part to play this summer. And they have Ronaldinho. Croatia's preparations have hardly been trouble free either. They were hit recently by a mystery virus that affected the majority of the squad at their base in Bad Bruckenau. The Croats also lost their final World Cup warm up game against Spain, so the mood in the camp is not overly positive. In fact, several key players have been quoted as saying that they would be happy to simply take a draw against Brazil and fight for second place. Zlato Kranjkar's men cannot be easily underestimated however. The manager has had to make considerable alterations to the team's style of play since the golden generation of Croatian football departed the scene. They are a tough team to beat and boast an extremely strong spine. With Darijo Srna's crossing ability on the right, and Dado Prso's eye for goal combined with the pace of Ivan Klasnic up front, Croatia could easily spring a surprise or too. Klasnic in particular could raise a few eyebrows in Germany. He has been extremely impressive all season for Werder Bremen, and his speed could trouble the Brazilian back line. Add the Kovac brothers and defensive lynchpin Igor Tudor into the mix, and you have a team capable of causing an upset. And then there's Niko Kranjkar, the manager's son, who offers typical East European creativity in the hole behind the front two. They also welcome back CSKA Moscow striker Ivica Olic to the fray, who should play some part in the match following his recovery from a serious knee injury that has kept him out for most of the domestic season.

Both teams met for the first time only recently in August 2005. They played out a 1-1 draw in Split. This will only be Croatia's third World Cup finals appearance since gaining independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. In their debut outing in France 8 years ago, they proved the tournament's biggest surprise package and finished third. Four years later in Korea and Japan they failed to reproduce that level of performance and crashed out in the first round. They will be hoping for better luck this time around, and their ease in qualifying for the tournament would mark them out as favourites to finish as runners up to Brazil in Group F.

Ronaldinho while there will be obvious interest in Ronaldo's form and fitness, or whether an ageing Brazilian defence will indeed prove to be the Seleção's weak link, the eyes of the world will be fixed firmly upon Barcelona's superstar midfielder. By rights, this should be Ronaldinho's World Cup just as Mexico '86 proved to be Maradona's World Cup, and the bucktoothed magician will be desperate to make an early mark upon the competition in Tuesday's fixture. He will also be particularly keen to dispel the idea that he performs better for his club than he does for his country. Whatever happens, expect the unexpected from the world's greatest player. On his day he is simply unstoppable, and if we are fortunate enough to see the real Ronaldinho turn up, then he may well be smiling all the way to the final. Croatia have been warned.

Darijo SrnaThe fleet-footed right winger, nicknamed the 'Beckham of the Balkans', is perhaps Croatia's most dangerous attacking option. Author of four goals in their qualifying campaign, Srna will also be relied upon to whip in his trademark crosses for the front pair of Prso and Klasnic. And with several question marks hanging over the form of his probable marker Roberto Carlos, their confrontation could be crucial to the outcome of the match.

Croatia will be hard to break down, and will set out to stifle Brazil in midfield. However, if the Seleção can hold firm at the back, then their sheer attacking quality should be enough to overwhelm their opponents. It will not be easy and it may make for some nervous viewing but Brazil are favourites to win their sixth World Cup for a reason. They will not blow their chances in the opening game.

25,000 Watch Brasil Train

A capacity crowd of around 25,000 watched champions Brazil hold a light FIFA World Cup™ training session in an atmosphere of near-hysteria on Thursday.

The first 20 minutes took place amid the backdrop of loud techno and Brazilian Axe music which was suddenly cut off, possibly on the orders of the coaching staff.

The stadium announcer also provided a running commentary as the players warmed up for practice with a game of pig in the middle.

There were loud screams every time playmakers Ronaldinho and Kaka went near the touchline as the scenes bore more resemblance to a pop concert.

The session, held at the stadium of German second division club Kickers Offenbach, was also interrupted when a teenager breached security and ran on to the field.

Led AwayHe managed to get an autograph from Ronaldinho before being led away.

Striker Ronaldo was rested because of a slight fever.

Brazil face Croatia in their Group F opener on Tuesday. Their other first-round opponents are Japan and Australia.

It was Brazil's last training session open to the public before the game against Croatia in Berlin.

Brazil spent the first two weeks of their FIFA World Cup preparations in the Swiss lakeside resort of Weggis where a noisy crowd of 5,000 watched the daily practice sessions.

The South Americans attract crowds of up to 80,000 for training sessions at home.

Ronaldo blister problems played down

Ronaldo trained with Brazil on Tuesday after recovering from the foot blisters which forced him off at half-time in Sunday's warm-up against New Zealand.
Ronaldo took part in a defence-versus-attack practice as the world champions held their first training sessions since arriving in Germany late on Sunday.
"If there was a match today, Ronaldo would play without any problem," team doctor Jose Luis Runco told reporters. "The blisters have healed.
"He was treated with a powder. It's all been sorted out."
Ronaldo, who will be taking part in his fourth FIFA World Cup™, scored the opening goal in a 4-0 rout of New Zealand.
However, the 29-year-old limped off after complaining he had four blisters on his left foot and two on his right.

The Brazilian selection arrived in Germany on Sunday night. The Auriverde delegation landed just after 11pm at Frankfurt's aiport. Ze Roberto - Brasil can be Beaten

Outgoing Bayern Munich midfielder Zé Roberto says Argentina, England and Germany are the rival teams most capable of derailing Brazil's World Cup bid.

Roberto Carlos claimed earlier this week that Brazil have at least an "80 percent chance" of claiming The Hexa this summer, but Zé Roberto is taking nothing for granted.

"We're not invincible," said Zé Roberto. "Along with ourselves, I'd list Argentina and England as the favourites to win the World Cup, while Germany are desperate to claim the trophy on home soil."

The 31-year-old won the League and Cup double with Bayern last season but general manager Uli Hoeness has said that the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder will now move on.

"The negotiations with Zé about extending his contract have unfortunately failed to produce a result," said Hoeness last month. "We wish him a good World Cup and then all the best for the rest of his career."

Brasil Issues Warning With Four - Goal Display

World champions Brazil at last broke cover today and in a 4-0 defeat of New Zealand showed glimpses of their unique brand of attacking football that makes the start of the FIFA World Cup™ in five days time such an mouth-watering prospect. It did not prove anywhere near such a good day for the Netherlands however as they were held by Australia and saw three key players limp off with midfielder Wesley Sneijder’s ankle problem described as “serious”. Especially in the form of Ronaldo, the player who put behind him a long period on the sidelines to become the adidas Golden Shoe winner in Korea/Japan 2002. Injury has again been a regular companion for this season but a 43rd minute opening goal will make the Real Madrid marksman feel a whole lot better.

Brazil have twice established a sequence of six consecutive wins – between 1978-1982 and also at Mexico 1970 where they won every tournament fixture.

England are the only other nation to achieve a Super Six. Five successive wins came during their one and only title triumph in 1966 on home soil and they added to it by beating Romania at the start of Mexico 1970. They then came up against Brazil in the match that will always be remembered as one of the FIFA World Cup classic confrontations, Jairzinho’s goal bringing the sequence to an end.

The Rio De Janeiro State Clubs

Fluminense, founded by the upper classes, were Rio's first football club. In 1911 a group of Fluminense players left to join Flamengo, already an established rowing club, where they formed its first football team. Botafogo started life as an idea that a fourteen-year-old had during his algebra class. He scribbled the suggestion down on a piece of paper. The teacher saw the note and enouraged his pupil to carry it through. Vasco da Gama, are the club of the Portuguese community.Flamengo soon established itself as the best-supported club in Rio. Many reasons are given, none conclusive. Some say it was because the club trained on public land in its formative years, others say its mass appeal comes from the late 1930s and early 1940s when the club won titles with the most famous black stars of the era - Domingos da Guia, Leonidas and Zizinho.In many situations to call someone a 'Flamenguista' is akin to calling them a slum-dweller. There are middle-class Flamengo fans, sure, yet the percentage increases the lower you go down the social ladder. If Flamengo are losing, opposing fans chant: 'ela, ela, ela - silencio na favela' - silence in the favela.

If Flamengo are the team of the masses, then conversely, Fluminense are the team of the aristocracy. I have met Fluminense fans living in poverty who believe they are more socially refined than their Flamenguista neighbours - merely because of their choice of football club. Botafogo gained, in the 1950s and 1960s, a reputation as the team supported by intellectuals and the superstitious. Vasco although still the club of the Portuguese, have a large black following too - linked to their pioneering introduction of black players.Only Vasco has a proper home stadium, at São Januário. The other three have such small grounds - holding only a few thousand each - that they tend to play all home games at the city-owned Maracanã.Fluminese means 'from or of the state of Rio', Vasco da Gama was the name of the Portuguese navigator, and Botafogo, and Flamengo are neighbourhoods in Rio's South Zone.

Garrincha, the Joy of Brazilian people!!

King of the right wing for Botafogo and Seleção, Mané Garrincha shocked the world with his different sized legs, which gave him an extraordinary ability to dribble. Discover more about the dramatic history of this modern day myth who turned football into an art form.Manoel Francisco Dos Santos, better known to world as Mané Garrincha was born on October 28, 1933 in Pau Grande in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Garrincha, was born a simple disabled boy who grew into a great and famous player, but the fame and fortune would come at a price for the man they called the “little bird”. Problems with money, injury, alcohol and women provoked his sharp decline and premature death. At his prime Garrincha was simply unstoppable, indeed Brazil never lost when both Garrincha and Pelé played together. He always remained popular in Brazil and is rightly remembered as the best winger that modern football has produced, with his ability to dribble with the outside of his right foot followed by amazing acceleration which left his opponents for dead, destroying defenses and his amazing crosses that always found their target. This is all the more amazing as Garrincha was born with several disabilities, one leg shorter than the other (6cm shorter) and knees that broke down throughout his career due to osteoarthritis, but this certainly didn’t prevent Garrincha from having an immensely successful career filled with national and international titles.Garrincha’s career began playing for an English owned textile factory’s team, for whom he worked. Scouts from Botafogo – which would become his life long beloved club – spotted the young Garrincha and he signed his first professional contract on June 21, 1953. Playing his first game, a friendly meeting, against Avelar in which the young winger scored. The "Fogão" idol was first called up to the Seleção by Coach Zézé Moreira on September 18 1955 for a game against Chile in the Maracanã. But it would be at the World cup in Sweden in 1958 that Garrincha would become internationally famous, under the coaching of Vicente Feola. He was such an awkward customer to defend against; in one move he would take the ball under his close control. In the next move, he would tease the defenders with his body movements, making even the coolest defenders to wonder whether it was a feint or not. Then, all out of a sudden, he would accelerate and get passed the one or two defenders marking him, leaving them standing in bewilderment, much to the amusement of the Swedish crowd. In 1962 in Chile, Pelé was wounded in the second game against Czechoslovakia and Aymoré Moreira (brother of Zézé) placed all the hopes of his team on Garrincha. But in the semi-final, Mané was sent off for retaliating for the many fouls the Chilean committed on him. But FIFA decided he could still play in the final thanks to the great influence of the C.B.D. After beating Czechoslovakia 3-1, Garrincha was voted the Player of the Tournament. He was also joint top-scorer, with 4 goals to his credit. In 1964, “the small bird” joined Corinthians in São Paulo where he would stay for 3 seasons. But already alcohol and injury were starting to hamper his game.In 1966 just prior to the world cup finals in 1966 World Cup, Garrincha was involved in a bad car crash that killed his mother-in-law. The Little Bird was no longer the same force. Still picked for the squad in the first match against Bulgaria, Garrincha scored a beautiful free-kick to help Brazil win. But in the next match, Brazil were beaten for the first time since 1954 ironically, by the same nation. 1966 was Garrincha’s last World cup with premature elimination at the end of the first round, Brazil’s earliest exit from the tournament before or since.Garrincha next left Brazil and signed for Colombian side Atlético Barranquilla where he stayed for only one season, before returning to Brazil and joining Flamengo, but by now the osteoarthritis was corroding his knees, more and more he was relying on alcohol to help ease the pain. He spent the majority of his time at Flamengo injured or out of the team.In 1972 Garrincha joined his last team Olaria thanks to an influential friend who realized the importance of staying in the game for Garrincha’s health. But by now the alcohol had taken its toll on his body and he was no longer recognizable as the player who FIFA now regard as the eighth best of all time and the fourth of South America. Garrincha’s career lasted about 12 years with 579 games and 249 goals, winning three carioca championships 1957, 1961 and 1962 and two Tournaments Rio-São Paulo 1962 and (1964 with Corinthians).On the 20th of January 1983, Mané died, aged only 49. His coffin was draped with the colors of Botafogo, and was escorted across Rio, where thousands of people lined the streets and Maracanã to pay homage to him. Twenty Years after Garrincha's death he was elected the best player in the world for 1962.

Mineiro welcomed in Weggis

While talent is clearly a pre-requisite of footballing success, even the game’s finest players are grateful for a bit of luck every so often.
Despite failing to make coach Carlos Parreira’s original 23 for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, defensive midfielder Mineiro now finds himself rubbing shoulders with Ronaldinho and Co. as a late replacement for FC Barcelona’s Edmilson, who was the victim of a meniscus injury.
Currently playing his club football at São Paulo, Carlos Luciano da Silva joined the reigning FIFA World Club champions in early 2005, a move that has seen him explode onto the world football scene. Born thirty years ago in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Mineiro earned his nickname thanks to his resemblance to Claudio Mineiro, left-back for Corinthians and Internacional de Porto Alegre during the 70s and 80s.
Mineiro started off in the youth ranks at Internacional, before turning professional at São Paulo side Rio Branco. Spells at Ponte Preta and São Caetano followed although the hard-working midfielder continued to toil in relative obscurity until making the move to São Paulo.

Mineiro shot to global fame at the FIFA Club World Championship 2005, scoring the winner against European giants Liverpool in the final to seal the Tricolor’s third intercontinental success.
Up until that point, the defensive midfielder had been called up to the Seleção on four occasions, the first way back in 2000 for a FIFA World Cup qualifier with Colombia, although he would be an unused substitute. In 2001, he made a 14-minute cameo in another qualifying tie, this time against Peru.
Shortly after swapping São Caetano for São Paulo last year, Parreira drafted in the tireless midfield man for Brazil's Germany 2006 qualifier with Uruguay in March 2005, and in April he played the full 90 minutes of Romario’s international farewell game against Guatemala.
No time to loseWith the tournament due to start in a matter of days, Mineiro has enjoyed a hectic introduction to life with Brazil’s FIFA World Cup squad. The player has already introduced himself to his team-mates, taken part in training sessions at the team’s base in Weggis, Switzerland, and registered as an official member of the Germany 2006 squad.
The player received a rousing welcome from the ever-present hordes of fans following Brazil’s training sessions, with shouts and raucous cheers from the packed stands greeting his every move.
During training on Friday, Mineiro was limited to physical work, while the other players were put through their paces with a series of tactical and technical drills.
Sitting down for his first press conference as a member of the squad going for an unprecedented sixth world crown, the player was clearly delighted at his last-minute call-up: “I never imagined I’d get so far in football. I’m very pleased to be entering a new phase in my life and I truly believe that this is a taste of things to come.”
Despite the rather rushed nature of his preparations, Mineiro is determined to make the most of his opportunity: “This is the high point of my career. It may be a new experience for me, but it’s important to be ready for anything.”

This is Ronaldinho Dentucho.He is a parody of Ronaldinho who appears in Brazil's most-viewed comedy programme Casseta & Planeta.Dentucho means "toothy", and is a play on "gaucho" - which is how Ron is still known in Brazil.There's another gag in the name Pau Grande. It is where Garrincha was born and also means "Huge Cock". "Im in Switzerland doing merchandising for my piece..." says Dentucho.The actor is Helio de la Peña, who has just released a book about football called Vai Na Bola, Glanderson. Street Life Days

1970 World Cup winner Rivelino named his autobiography "Come home off the street, Roberto" in reference to the habitual holler he would hear cry out from his mother at meal times when he was growing up.

Until the young Roberto Rivelino reached the stage of puberty that allowed him to experiment with novelty facial hair, a local park in Sau Paulo was the only canvas he had upon which to express himself.That park is now an ice cream factory and- in an interview in yesterday's The Times- the 1970 World Cup winner reveals his fear that the lack of safe places available for Brazilian kids to play football could ultimately signal the demise of the Seleção.There is plenty of evidence to counteract this view (witness the emergence of Robinho last year and Manchester United-bound Kerlon this), but nonetheless Rivelino is predicting a gloomy future for the national side."The concept of street football in São Paulo doesn't exist any more," he says, " you can kind of see it in Rio still because they have the beach, but not here. From the point of view of the national team that's bad because the real talent comes from the streets, from the kids who play there all day, every day, whenever they can."Rivelino, who named his autobiography "Come home off the street, Roberto" in reference to his mother's mealtime holler, has built a football school in the Brooklin Paulistinha district of São Paulo in order to give local kids somewhere safe to kick a football around.

Ronaldo Fires Warning Shots

While speculation concerning his form and fitness continues to surround Ronaldo, the Real Madrid star made light of the controversy by firing his way up to third place in the Seleção's all-time list of top scorers this week.

At 29, Ronaldo has repeatedly expressed his desire to fire his country to a sixth world title and it would appear to be only a matter of time before he overtakes Romario in second place in the Brazilian Football Confederation's (CBF) table of scorers. The diminutive striker, still playing at American side Miami FC, registered 71 goals with Brazil's senior side.However, it would take an exceptional achievement for Ronaldo to beat the record set by Brazil's biggest star, Pele. O Rei scored an astonishing 95 goals in 114 games for the Seleção before retiring from international football in 1971 at the age of 30. Such was his prowess that Pele had already hit 1,000 career goals by the age of 29, and notched a staggering 1,281 times in a total of 1,363 games before hanging up his boots for the final time.
However, Ronaldo can have more realistic hopes of breaking another long-standing record come the FIFA World Cup. The 12 goals he has scored in the tournament to date leave him just two short of German hitman Gerd Muller's record of 14. Yet another target to aim at for a man who has picked up two FIFA World Cup winner's medals from his last three tournaments (USA 94, France 98 and Korea/Japan 2002). Ronaldinho Gaucho - Biography

Ronaldinho de Assis Moreira was born on 21st March, 1980 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He helped Brazil win the World under-17 Championship in Egypt. During the competition he was scouted by local club Gremio and signed his first professional contract.
In 1999, after hitting 15 goals in 14 games for Gremio, Ronaldinho won his first senior cap for Brazil against Latvia. After shining in that match he made Brazil’s Copa America squad and scored an incredible goal against Venezuela as Brazil won the trophy. Ronaldinho scored his first hat-trick for Brazil against Saudi Arabia in the Confederations Cup semi-finals later that year.
In 2001 he left Gremio for Paris St. Germain (PSG) but was unable to make his debut because of contract rows, until 3 months later when FIFA stepped in.
In 2002 Ronaldinho was voted France’s player of the month for January after hitting 6 goals in 7 games for PSG.
In June of that year he scored the famous freekick against David Seaman in Brazil's World Cup Quarter Finals match against England (but was it a cross?), however later in that match he got a red card. After being suspended in the semis Ronaldinho won the World Cup with Brazil, playing in the final against Germany.
In the 2003 summer transfer market he rejected Manchester United to join Spanish side Barcelona for £21m.
After playing well for Barca Ronaldinho was named as one of the 11 greatest living footballers, announced by FIFA and chosen by Brazil legend Pele.
Then, Ronaldinho scored 15 league goals to inspire an improved Barcelona to 2nd place in La Liga. Soon after he suffered the first major injury of his career and missed Brazil’s Copa America campaign.
Ronaldinho pleased Barcelona fans by turning down Chelsea and agreeing a new contract. In December he was named best player in the world for 2004 by FIFA beating Shevchenko and Henry to first place.
Six months later Ronaldinho helped Barcelona to win La Liga 2005 easily outdoing rivals Real Madrid.
In September 2005 Ronaldinho added to his bulging trophy cabinet when he won the FIFPro's World Player of the Year in a poll of 38,000 professional football players in 40 countries. Wayne Rooney won the young player award.
In November 2005 Ronaldinho was named 2005 European Footballer of the Year - the award known as the Ballon D'Or is voted for by European football journalists selected by French magazine France Football.
The 2005/2006 season ended in excellent fashion for Barca and Ronaldinho after they won both La Liga and the Champions League.

Brasil already gathering crowds even in training

The clock is ticking, the kick-off for Germany 2006 is drawing ever nearer and the 32 participants are arriving at their training camps to prepare for the impending global showdown. At least that is the theory.
Every day, the crowds of enthusiastic fans flocking to the training grounds of the world's elite teams grow larger. The euphoria knows no bounds. Simple shooting drills, tactical sessions and 'five against two' games are being watched by bigger crowds than some top-flight matches.
For several days, Brazilian fans in the picturesque Swiss town of Weggis have contributed to an extraordinary series of events. Against the majestic backdrop of the Alps, around 10,000 fans have turned out to transform the world champions’ training sessions into Samba parties. Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka and Co seem to appreciate the support, showing their gratitude by stopping to sign countless autographs before returning to the changing rooms.
Things are equally crazy in Wangen, a small German town of 21,000 that Togo have taken by storm. Since 15 May, the place has been decorated with as many red, yellow and green flags as it has German ones. The daily training sessions of the Togolese team, conducted by their German coach, Otto Pfister, have become almost municipal festivals.
Records broken in DusseldorfHowever, once again, it was the German national team who led the way. The host nation’s training session in Dusseldorf on Wednesday afternoon was watched by 40,000 fans, who had packed into the stadium just to see Jurgen Klinsmann put his team through their paces. Never before have Germany attracted such an enormous crowd just to see them train.
The phenomenon was particularly satisfying for the city, whose neighbouring town Cologne held the previous record. In the friendly rivalry between the two major cities on the Rhine, it was a case of David winning the bragging rights from Goliath - for the time being at least!
With crowds to watch training sessions, live broadcasts of Brazil plotting their route to the final from Weggis and African folk festivals in Wangen – the FIFA World Cup has arrived in Germany!
